Liz Dunn, PTA President, called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m. Liz opened with an introduction of Dr. Owner.
Dr. Owner opened with an introduction of the Specialist Group for ICES. She announced the impressive number of years of experience these individuals bring when all resumes are put together. It adds up to a great range of talent that benefits all the students.
The following specialists attended the PTA meeting: Mr. Moran, Technology Specialist; Ms. Woodall, Librarian and Media Specialist (Ms. Poole was unable to attend); Mr. Taguding, Health and Fitness Specialist (Mr. Scott was unable to attend); Pam Barton, Reading Specialist; and Ms. Kraft, Music Specialist (Mr. Pettis was unable to attend). Dr. Owner added that the Music Department will hold an Open House the 1st week of June. She also mentioned that for these events there is no competition between students for specific parts; all names go into a hat and everyone has a chance to participate.
Denise Racz, Special Education teacher, also attended the meeting; she is new to ICES this after teaching at Lane ES. Dr. Owner also welcomed Yodit Negasi Neftaliem, Cafeteria Hostess. Elaine Coburn, 2nd grade teacher, and Badria Alshereif, Parent Liaison, were also introduced.
Both Dr. Owner and Mr. Macrina confirmed that ICES is growing. We currently have 777 students enrolled with a capacity to seat 950. Two more teachers and all-day kindergarten have been confirmed for the 2007-2008 school year, as well as another assistant principal.
President’s Remarks
Liz Dunn introduced Brad Center, Fairfax County School Board member (and Dan Storck, FCPS School Board Chair, when he arrived later in the meeting). A motion to approve the April minutes was made by Kevin Brugman and seconded by Marsha Porter-Houghton. April minutes were approved. Teacher and Staff Appreciation Luncheon and Breakfast will be Monday, May 7 and Wednesday, May 9. Thank you to those who have volunteered food, drinks, etc.
Education:
Steve Wallen had no report since all of his areas have finished for the year.
Denise Bolton reported that the Pizza N Pasta Dinner night is still being worked out. Liz Townsend reported the newsletter deadline is May 4. Kevin Brugman needs website info. Anything for the summer would be great. Cherie Rogers-Mazyck announced that the school supply kit flyer will go out in Thursday folders; May 25 is the deadline for orders.
Movie Night was a huge success. Sixty pizzas (from Kingstowne Domino’s) and drinks were provided by Roger and Valerie Derflinger from ReMax/Allegiance! Thank you to CSLL for the movie projection equipment. A big Thanks to Liz Townsend and Theresa Painter for all the popcorn they popped all night long.
Ways and Means:
Lavender’s catalogs need to be chosen for the Fall fundraiser. We can choose to have one catalog or one main catalog and supplemental flyers.
Box Tops have netted $321.42 for the year. The Kick Off Summer campaign is underway, and a flyer will go out to students; 100 labels by May 15 will net 15,000 bonus points! This will help ICES acquire software programs.
Domino’s coupons are still available; we’ll send out another flyer before the end of school.
Treasurer
Marsha Porter-Houghton reported a slow month for funds. Spiritwear and Box Tops brought in some funds for the month.
