DRAFT Meeting Minutes

June 6, 2007

Attendees:  Dr. Owner, Mike Macrina, Liz Dunn, Lorie Kappeler, Kevin Brugman,  Denise Bolton, Marsha Porter-Houghton, Liz Townsend, Cherie Rogers-Mazyck, Jerry Franck, Steve Wallen, Janet Yannucci, Joanne Silbermann, Janette Pai Kim, Susan Brock, Michelle Foy, Tonia Parker, Yin Mei Hueskes, Anne Hyde

Liz Dunn, PTA President, called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m.  Liz opened with a review of the agenda and an introduction of Dr. Owner.

Principal’s Remarks

Dr. Owner stated the school is getting ready to close for the summer. This seems to be the busiest time of the year with inventorying of supplies and interviewing for a new Assistant Principal.

Dr. Owner welcomed and introduced the Special Education Team:  Janet Yannucci, 6th grade; Anne Hyde 1st grade and previous 2nd grade teacher; and Tonia Parker, self-contained 1st-2nd grade.  Some are charter members who have been here since ICES doors opened and all have a special place in Dr. Owner’s heart.

Dr. Owner closed with a presentation on – “What Happens When You Go to the Principal’s Office.”  She has 2 rules: 1. Do not sit until permission is given.; 2. Tell the truth. She takes out her red book and writes the students name in it. They talk about the situation, and discuss the story and related events.  Dr. Owner speaks with the student about the importance of telling the truth and how to handle the situation in the future.  Then they discuss how to best handle conflicts and how to make the entire situation a learning experience.

Depending on the circumstances, a call is made to the family to close the loop on the issue at hand.  Sometimes the parents are not involved due to the fact that the student may be harder on himself/herself than what Dr. Owner or their parents would have been. Is your name in the RED BOOK?!

President’s Remarks

Liz Dunn opened with a review of the May minutes.  Jerry Franck made a motion to approve the minutes; Denise Bolton seconded the motion.  The May minutes were approved.

Liz stated she did not have much to report considering it was the final PTA meeting of the year.  However, she took a few minutes to reflect on the year, and the outcomes and successes we had with the various PTA events and activities. Liz thanked the board members individually – Janette Pai Kim, Steve Wallen, Angela Turnbull, Marsha Porter-Houghton, Lorie Kappeler (and Marta Swanson who moved late last year), as well as all of the PTA chairpersons, volunteers and members for their dedication, enthusiasm and support.  She also thanked

Dr. Owner and Mr. Macrina, the office and support staff, and all the teachers for making the past year a good one.

She will miss everyone and looks forward to middle school at Hayfield with her son, Brian.

Vice Presidents’ Reports

Education

Steve Wallen thanked Susan Brock, Yin Mei and Denise Bolton for making things run so smoothly.

Community Outreach

Liz Townsend reported that the Island Breeze deadline is Friday, June 8.

Liz Dunn and Dr. Owner gave a special thanks to Kevin Brugman – he will be greatly missed by all as the PTA’s Webmaster, involved PTA member and dedicated parent as both children will be attending another school in Fairfax County.  Kevin presented Dr. Owner with a compilation of ICES photos taken over the past four years.

Ways and Means

Janette thanked her chairpersons, and Liz Dunn thanked Janette for her service over the past four years at Island Creek.  Janette and her son, Christian, will be moving over to Hayfield Middle School next year.

Denise announced that one last Restaurant Night will take place at Pasta/Pizza in the Landsdowne Shopping Center on Tuesday, June 12 and Wednesday, June 13.  Twenty percent of the profit will go to ICES.  Thank you to Denise for arranging this event.

Cherie Rogers-Mazyck reported that 302 school supply kits and 27 backpacks were sold for next year!

Treasurer

Marsha Porter-Houghton reported that the PTA was able to pay for four students (patrol officers) to go to Patrol Camp this year.  School supplies have netted $13,000.00 so far, with $500.00 of that total coming to the PTA.

Marsha requested approval of a shed to be purchased for approximately $2,500.00 to help replace space lost (PTA room) due to all-day kindergarten coming to ICES in 2007-2008 school year.  The shed purchase was approved.

Old Business

The Bylaws Review Committee (Jerry Franck, chair, Joanne Silbermann and Cherie Rogers-Mazyck) presented its suggested revisions.  The membership approved the revisions.  Liz Dunn, Lorie Kappeler and Jerry Franck signed the revisions; the document will be sent to the state PTA office in Richmond for final approval.

New Business

Dr. Owner thanked the current PTA board and acknowledged PTA President Liz Dunn for her positive relationships and comfort level she brought to the ICES staff.

The installation of the new PTA board for 2007-2008 took place.  Liz read two inspirational poems during the installation, and introduced the board while passing the gavel to new PTA President Marsh Porter-Houghton.

Marsha thanked Liz and the other board members for their friendship and support.

Meeting was adjourned at 8:00 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Lorie Kappeler-Secretary
