ISLAND CREEK PTA MEETING

Minutes of September 13, 2005

I.                  PRESIDENT’S REPORT:  Jeanne Igo called the meeting to order at 7:06

p.m.  She welcomed all attendees and teachers and introduced the Board members.

 

II.               ADMINISTRATIVE REPORT: Dr. Owner introduced the teachers in attendance and thanked them for attending.  She mentioned Back To School Night and what to expect in terms of presenting the SOL test results, kids safety (Mr. Macrina), shared a cartoon expressing how much she appreciates the PTA and how proud she is to have us.  Dr. Owner expressed how important communication is and her door is always open, don’t hesitate to call.  Learn from our past, know each other, and every child counts!

 

III.           Motion to approve June minutes, motion was seconded.

 

IV.             COMMUNITY OUTREACH: LIZ DUNN

 Everyone had done a good job, keep it up.

·        Volunteers are very important with PTA events

·        Newsletter due Friday after meeting

·        Website:  islandcreekpta.org will be handled by Kevin Brugman

·        Store sponsored programs:  Safeway, Giant & boxtops

·        Membership:  going well, this year $8 per person/272 members this far

·        Publicity:  Tara McBeth, Xerox person

·        Cluster 5 meetings

 

V.                EDUCATION:  STEVE WALLEN

·        Reflections due October 28, 2005

·        FLEX program

·        CAPS:  assembly each quarter, tentative dates, check website

·        Math & Science:  Madd Science for 2 months

·        Writing Program

·        Beautification:  Sandy needs to submit proposal for planting, Dr. Owner added that bigger letters on sign is on the way

·        Campbell family:  memorial donations for tree & bench in the back of school

 

VI.             WAYS & MEANS:  JEN BISHOP

·        Restaurant Night: IHOP, September 27, 2005 5-9 p.m.

·        Basket Bingo (Andrea & Terri) – October 21, 2005 @ 7:oo  p.m., $2000 donation was received from a local realtor

·        Gift Wrap deadline is September 23, 2005

·        Simons Evening of Giving: November 20, 2005 from 11-6 p.m., Pentagon City Mall, tickets are $10 ($7 goes to Island Creek, $3 goes to the mall).  Tickets are on sale now.

·        Spirit Wear:  car magnets $5, T-shirts (prices vary)

·        Craft Fair: Headed by Shelia Dixon, December 3, 2005 from 10-2 p.m.  $35 per table, 75% of proceeds to PTA

·        Thanks to everyone for ordering school supplies

·        Free Events in the making:  Spaghetti dinner, movie night, sock hop

 

VII.         TREASURER:  MARSHA PORTER

·        Reviewed budget

·        Voted on budget

·        Explained how she used Quick Book Program and reviewed the budget from the beginning of Island Creek PTA’s first year

·        Membership has already exceeded the budget prediction

 

NEW BUSINESS:

 

·        NPTA vote on web for the recommended legislation

·        PTA convention in Tysons Corner in November

·        Katrina Donations: pen pal relationships to a school in the disaster area, school supplies, family in our community, Fairfax County PTA, Hayfield HS, September 24 @ 7:30 p.m., $10 donation, Gift Cards, Operation Buddy Pack, and guests spoke of ties to Katrina

·        Struble Family – Laura, a 6th grader, has been diagnosed with Cancer
