MINUTES – NOVEMBER 1, 2005
** Meeting was called to order by J. Igo (PTA President) @ 7:05 p.m.

v THANK YOU!! For all the wonderful trips. The Joe Romano assembly, 4th grade trip to Jamestown, Kindergarten went to the Pumpkin Patch and thanks to all the parents that help out with field day
** President motioned to approve October minutes – approved
** Guest Speaker: Mrs. Amy Morel L’Horset, Diabetes Nutrition Educator
** Hot Topic – Kids and Nutrition (Obesity)
- Kids getting too much sugar (14 scoops of sugar is in a 16 oz soda)
- Portion size matters
- Average dinner plate in 1956 was 8 in
- 20-25% of children under 18 are overweight
- Type II Diabetes is common in kids
- 1 in 3 will develop diabetes in their life
- Not enough fiber in children’s diets
- They need whole grain, beans, fruit & veggies, dairy products for calcium (school age need 4 – 4oz cups per day) and plenty of exercise

- She served a turkey wrap, V8 splash/diet sprite punch, choc chip cookies (whole wheat flour, ½ sugar, ½ splenda)

- Reflection entry ended – 25 entries (will present at December PTA meeting)
- Flex – 6 classes
- Madd Science – 57 kids/3 classes
** COMMUNITY OUTREACH
- Membership/350 members
- Volunteers/going well
- Basket Bingo went well
- Newsletter deadline, November 4, 2005
- Website/keep em coming
- Store products/Campbell’s not worth it, boxtops doing well
- Please register at Giant
- Beautification/new plants by sign post/winter decorations will be up after Thanksgiving
- 12 events need to be scheduled with office (sock hop (Feb) & spaghetti dinner (spring)
** WAYS & MEANS
- Thanks to everyone who helped with Basket Bingo (Ms. Leech won trip to Disney World)
- Simons Day of Giving/tickets $10 ($7 goes to Island Creek)
- Craft Fair/December 3, 2005/40 vendors so far (there will be a gift wrap section, choir will sing, refreshments will be available
- Movie Night on December 9 will show HERBIE FULLY LOADED and Croc Creed video will view at the preshow
- Gift arrive will arrive for pick up
** TREASURER REPORT
- Help support Simons Gift of Giving
- Gift wrap was EXCELLENT!!!!!
- Spritwear needs your support/t-shirts and magnets still available
- Would like to invest money in CDs
- Audit from last year is going on, should be ready for December meeting
- Taxes are due November 2005
- State and National PTA dues are due
