Mazyck, Toni Shipe, Liz Dunn and Liz Townsend
The meeting was called to order at 7:05 p.m., by Jeanne Igo,
PTA President. Jeanne welcomed all present to the meeting. Jeanne thanked our
volunteers for a fantastic year. The PTA has had a tremendously successful year
which could not have been done without their volunteers.
The April minutes were reviewed. Marsha Porter-Houghton
moved to accept the minutes. Toni Shipe seconded the motion and the minutes
were approved. The audit was reviewed. Liz Dunn moved to accept the audit and
Janet Yannucci seconded the motion. The audit was approved.
Dr. Owner welcomed the special education team, a group near
and dear to her heart and a great joy to work with. There were four
representatives at the meeting: Janet Yannucci, Stephanie Ahearn, Anne Hyde and
Meghan Smith. Although Island Creek’s staff was blessed with many babies this
year (12 in all), the special education team was blessed the most. Dr. Owner
also introduced Dave Chubb. Dave worked with Dr. Owner about 17 years ago. He
represents Audio Enhancement, a company that produces classroom sound
enhancement equipment which helps teachers improve student performance. Dave
gave the PTA a very informative presentation on these sound enhancement systems.
Ways and Means – Jeanne Igo for Jen Bishop
- The Baja Fresh restaurant night went well, raising $189
for the PTA.
- The school supplies program has already sold 15 for the
kindergarten at their open house. The remainder of the students will receive
the information in their Thursday folders on May 11th with the
order deadline of May 26th.
- The gift wrap catalogs were passed around for decisions
of which ones to use. Although the gift wrap company will provide home
delivery for the students, it charges 10% of the sales profit. Jeanne said
they were going to continue distribution at the school to raise as much money
as possible.
Education – Steve Wallen
- The Flex program is wrapping up their last classes this
week.
- Madd Science is finished.
- The CAPS program is done for the year. The PTA is still
looking for someone to fill this spot.
Community Outreach – Liz Dunn
- The PTA will sponsor the first Island Creek picnic on
June 2nd, tentatively scheduled from 5 p.m. - 8 p.m., at the
school. There will be grilling and games for the families and staff of Island
Creek. Jeanne asked if there was a way to include the upcoming
kindergarteners, as well. Dr. Owner said they would help with that by sending
information home.
- Liz Townsend asked for newsletter articles by Friday.
- Jeanne said Teacher Appreciation Week is next week.
There will be a lunch from Olympians on Monday for all staff.
Treasurer – Marsha Porter-Houghton
- There is still some school spirit inventory available.
- This month’s expenses were paid out to Madd Science and
Megan Hicks (CAPS).
- The school year is starting to wind down and people are
starting to turn in their receipts.
- The year was very good for fund raising and not all
budgets were liquidated. We have a surplus of money and need to spend
$13,000-$16,000 because we cannot have more than $25,000 in our account for
next year. There was a discussion about buying a filing cabinet for the PTA,
money for staff appreciation, and the electronic teaching systems presented at
the beginning of the meeting. All money needs to be paid by June 30th.
Liz Townsend made a motion to spend about $14,800 on 10 electronic teaching
systems from Audio Enhancement, which was seconded and approved.
New Business
- The PTA Board slate has been filled for the 2006-2007
school year, and will be voted on and installed next month. There will be no
individual office voting needed since everyone is running unopposed.
- There are still openings on PTA committees available.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:33 p.m.
Respectfully Submitted,
Sarah Hoyt Weller
PTA Secretary
