The meeting was called to order at 7:06
p.m.,
by Jeanne Igo, PTA President. Jeanne thanked everyone for coming
tonight and
to those who have donated meals to the Struble family. Jeanne will
write a note to the family to tell them we will be discontinuing the sign up
list in the office.
Dr. Owner welcomed and introduced Christie Corsoro.
Christie is the staff representative for the preschool at Island Creek.
Christie teaches the PAC program for students with autism. Dr. Owner
acknowledged Steve Wallen for his fantastic advocacy. Steve helped move the PAC
class to a full-year schedule.
The PTA enjoyed a wonderful safety presentation by Dr.
Owner and Mr.
Macrina. They explained the procedures and policies which would be
implemented in case of lockdown, evacuation, tornado, fire
and other emergencies.
Ways and Means – Jeanne Igo for Jen Bishop
- There will be another restaurant night at Baja Fresh on
April 19th. This will be the last restaurant night for the year.
- The school supply list is updated and ready to be sent
to the supply company. The PTA is looking for someone to do this job. Also,
the PTA will not be ordering any extra supply kits for next year. The cost to
ship the kits back is prohibitive to any extras.
Education – Steve Wallen
- Denise Bolton reported that ribbons for Reflections
winners were given to her on Friday. There was a discussion as to if and
when the PTA could have a presentation before the April or May meeting. It
was agreed to do it in April. Denise also had a question for Dr. Owner about
how to return the artwork to the students because she didn’t have the names of
the teachers. Dr. Owner asked that she give all the artwork to Lydia and she
would take care of it.
- Mad Science is on the 4th week of a 10-week
session.
- FLEX has a total of 8 classes:
3 Spanish, 2 French, 1
German, 1 Chinese, and 1 Sign Language. Extended classes for 2
Spanish and 1 French group are registering now. Once the registrations are
turned in, a decision will be made regarding if there are enough students to
continue.
Community Outreach – Liz Dunn
- Liz reported the huge success of the Sock Hop. Kudos to
Cindy Harlow who is already talking about a Hoedown
for next year!
- Liz asked about the possibility of a Spaghetti Dinner.
Jeanne said that many people had been asking her,
too. She said they had some flexibility in that decision and may possibly do
an ice cream social or pizza party
before the end of the school year.
- Liz said there is a Cluster 5 meeting at the end of the
month. The Cluster 5 meeting occurs twice a year and is a great way to learn
about what others schools in the area are doing. Of course, Island Creek
always outshines them!
- Volunteers – Cindy Wade thanked the many people who
helped out at Art Night. It was fabulous!
- The newsletter deadline is this Friday. The newsletter
has been shorter more recently due to lack of submissions. Please send your
articles to Liz Townsend.
- Liz Dunn brought up
news related to a
possible boundary study. The need for a new study is that South
County High School is already too crowded. Brad Center, our School Board
representative, says that trailers will be needed next year. Our area
(Cluster 5)
is looking into the possibility of hiring a consultant regarding
this issue.
All
interested parents should get involved
in the boundary study process. Brad Center will try to meet with
PTAs in this area
over the summer.
- Beautification - Jeanne reported that we may get a
maintenance contract for
the
school’s ongoing landscaping
plans.
Treasurer’s Report
Marsha Porter reviewed the budget to date. A $700 check
was deposited from the restaurant night at Red, Hot and Blue. The Sock Hop
receipts have not all been turned in yet. The bill from the Harriet Tubman
performance has been paid.
In addition, $500 has been moved to a new category for the
after-school
SOL prep program starting next week;
this program is for
approximately 60
students (identified by their teachers)
whom
they feel
will benefit from extra time spent studying reading and math.
Marsha asked that receipts be sent to her for paper and snacks.
New Business
We are looking for some people for the nominating committee
for next year’s PTA. A list of vacancies has been prepared along with the job
descriptions to help the committee.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:50.
Respectfully Submitted,
Sarah Weller
PTA Secretary
