Committee Reports

Ways and Means

Jen Bishop, VP of Ways and Means, reported that most of this year’s fundraisers have been completed except for upcoming restaurant nights.  Our next restaurant event will be with Red, Hot & Blue on Tuesday, January 31 with 20% of the total days’/nights’ receipts going to Island Creek.  (This also includes gift cards and takeout.)

Movie night was a success.  A special thanks goes to Roger Derflinger for supporting the event and buying pizza and drinks for everyone, as well as to the Pruitts for furnishing the equipment.  Unfortunately, the Pruitts will no longer be able to help with movie night, but there is the possibility of renting Ft. Belvoir’s movie theater for $150.00.  It was also suggested we no longer offer drop-off service; with future movie nights, all children must have a parent with them.

Education

Steve Wallen, VP of Education, reported everything was underway with the new session of Mad Science, Currently, we have 26 students participating.  Last session, 56 students enjoyed their experiments as Mad Scientists.  Sara Weller reported that the next CAPS program will be Nana Pudding scheduled for February 8th. The Flex program is also starting  registration for a new session. Cindy Wade thanked all the volunteers that are so generous with their time and talents.

Community Outreach

Liz Dunn, VP of Community Outreach, reported that we have an all-time high number of PTA members.  Of course, we are still accepting members through the end of the school year.

Cindy Harlow gave an update on the Sock Hop, scheduled for Friday, February 10.  Everything is on track, but volunteers are still needed for clean-up.

Liz Townsend needs articles submitted to her by Friday for this month’s newsletter.

Kevin Brugman encouraged everyone with news and/or information to submit it to the Island Creek PTA website.

As always, Cindy Wade is available to recruit volunteers for upcoming events and activities.

Finance

Marsha Porter, Treasurer, reviewed the budget to date and…A contract for Lavender’s (gift wrap sale) has been signed for next year.

New Business

A question was raised about the 4th grade Colonial Day event for this year and why the program was shortened, compared to past years.  Dr. Owner responded that the main reason is that there are fewer questions (1) on the SOLs pertaining to this subject.  The question was also raised about what to do with the remainder of the budgeted amount not spent on this year’s program.  Dr. Owner did not know what would take its place, but if appropriate they would find ways use it.  Dr. Owner also spoke about the upcoming WAWAW event and strings concert.  In addition, she mentioned that our librarian, Jill Woodall, has been featured on the FCPS public broadcasting channel speaking about the  reading program. Job well done!

Jeanne Igo spoke about the need to find volunteers for the nominating committee.  She explained the role of the nominating committee is to seek out interested parties to serve on the PTA board and  committees for next year.

Mrs. Igo distributed a handout from FCPS Board Member Brad Center.  A reminder was also given to sign up to provide meals for the Struble family.  Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Macrina on the birth of their new baby, Adam Nicholas.

Due to other obligations, Candy Cook has resigned as secretary so the PTA is looking for a new volunteer for this position.  Mrs. Igo expressed her thanks to Ms. Cook for her time and effort this year.

Before and after the meeting, a slide show of Island Creek happenings by Kevin Brugman was displayed.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:02 p.m.
