Island Creek PTA Meeting
Minutes of September 8, 2004

I. President’s Report and Old Business:
Dr. Owner introduced Mr. Macrina and the teachers in attendance. She introduced our new parent liaison and mentioned our beautiful new parent lounge. Dr. Owner thanked the parents for the food and support for the teachers’ luncheon. She also thanked those who catalogued and organized many of the Reading books for the classrooms. Dr. Owner described how the mission statement for Island Creek came into existence and the valued character qualities that the staff will be reinforcing and rewarding all year long. She explained how children earn Croc Stock.
Community Outreach:
Sheila Dixon was not able to attend the meeting.

Hospitality – Beth Monroney spoke about the hospitality committee. They are working on monthly goodies for the teacher’s lounge. Jen Bishop let the committee know that there will be money for the more food than last year at Basket Bingo.
Volunteer Coordinator – Our volunteer Coordinator is Aundra Rhone-Jones and her email addresses are a.m.rhone@cox.net or aundra.rhone-jones@dla.mil. Please let her know if you need volunteers for your activity.
Ways and Means:
Penny Klein reported on the following:
October 22nd there will be a Basket Bingo fundraiser $15.00 now or $20.00 at the door. November 21st will be the Simon’s Evening of Giving at Pentagon City Mall – cost is $10.00 ($7.00 to the PTA and $3.00 to Simon Fund). Giftwrap fundraiser is on now (get your orders in!) The new Spiritwear with Cosmo and Christy Croc is available and will be sold at Back to School Night and other fundraisers.
Safeway is doing a root beer float fundraiser and needs kid volunteers to serve and/or make them. Candy Cook is our contact with Safeway and has made supporting our school part of their Safeway Cares program. Sandy England will take your Giant and Safeway numbers and enter them for you if you can’t get to it yourself.
Box Tops – Christy Brusick reported that box tops can be sent in any time. There will be parties for the three classes that bring in the most. The Box Tops can be found on many General Mills products.
Fundraising—Jen Bishop described the IHOP Fundraiser to come, which will include p.j.s at dinnertime! Simone may be leaving, and Jen may need a co-chair if the unthinkable happens.
Beautification – Sandy England described the big garden benches that they are considering installing next to the garden. They will add ID tags by the plants. There may be a picnic table added up near the field area for teachers and kids to use.
Education:
Howard Wahlberg introduced the chairperson for each of the following:
Math & Science Made Easy - Janet Cliatt is our chairperson. Volunteers are needed to teach the classes; volunteers will receive training and are paid. The Math section will be first. The sessions are for 8 weeks and will start with the Kindergarten and 1st grade students.
CAPS- Sarah Weller is the chairperson. She described some of her plans for the Assemblies (Bill Wellington—math & science is scheduled for October). She is trying for an evening show.
Reflections – Denise Bolton has volunteered to chair this committee.
Special Education – Aundra Rhone-Jones will chair this committee.
Membership- Liz Dunn reported that the membership numbers are ahead of last years numbers. Again the single adult member fee is $8.00 and family membership is $14.00.
New Business:
Jeanne Igo asked about patrol gear needs. Dr. Owner said the Patrol leaders will ask for the budgeted money if they need it.
The room Parent Coordinator position will assist in effective communication between Room Parents and Teachers and will e in charge of the Room Parents as a group.
Meeting was adjourned at approximately 8:15 pm. The next meeting will be held October 6, 2004 at 7:00 pm.
