Island Creek PTA Meeting
August 4, 2004
Attendees: Liz Townsend, Sonia Smith, Jeanne Igo, Jen Bishop, Penny Klein, Sheila Dixon, Sarah Weller, Liz Dunn, Cindy Wade, Margaret von Kolnitz, Janet Cliatt, Sara Whitlock, Betty Harris, Howard Wahlberg, and Dr. Susan Owner.
I. President’s Report
Jeanne Igo called the meeting to order at 7:07pm. She
welcomed all attendees and introduced new PTA members. She asked that Dr. Owner
speak about the new school year to come. She asked for any questions on the
minutes of the last meeting. Some corrections were voiced. A motion was made
to approve the June 2004 PTA Minutes as corrected. It was seconded. The motion
carried and the minutes were approved.
Community Outreach:
Sheila Dixon asked for volunteers for the teachers’ brunch.
Newsletter – Liz Townsend asked about the timing of the first newsletter. It was decided that August 15th was the due date if anyone wanted to contribute to the mini Island Breeze that would come out with the school’s newsletter.
Ways and Means:
Penny Klein reported on the following:
October 22nd will be a Basket Bingo fundraiser. The gift wrap fundraiser will begin in September.
Fundraising—Jen described the Bingo Night. She also pointed out that Bill Alewine from Century 21 made a $2,000.00 donation to the PTA. Tivares Concrete made a $100.00 donation. The Simon’s Evening of Giving at Pentagon City Mall will be on November 21st. Wooden school collectibles are still available for $10.00. Spirit Wear clothing with the new logos will be sold at the Open House and Kindergarten Orientation.
Education:
Howard Wahlberg reported on the following:
The Relections program for next year needs a Chairperson. Also, there will be a new grant proposal that funds and supports a variety of programs for which teachers can apply. The criteria is more standardized. The Flex Program has a new chairperson.
Math & Science Made Easy - Janet Cliatt reported that the name has changed but the program will stay essentially the same. Volunteers are needed to teach the classes; volunteers will receive training.
Membership- Liz Dunn reported that the family membership donation was difficult for the accountant to process because the number of members didn’t match the money collected. Discussion was held on how to rectify this problem. Liz and Sonia will talk more about this.
CAPS – Sarah Weller is excited to be in charge of making the students’ assemblies happen at Island Creek.
New Business:
Jeanne Igo brought up a request for change of PTA meeting from Tuesday to Wednesday nights. Discussion was held on whether it would be a by-law change. It was decided that the first meeting would be Wed., September 8th, 2004 and all subsequent meetings would be the first Wednesday of each month.
Our audit was done and the cost for the audit was $400.00. Taxes will be due soon and the cost for it to be done by the accountant will be $200.00. Please use the new forms for all deposits submitted to our Treasurer.
The teacher luncheon during back to school week was discussed. Teacher gifts were discussed and a holiday gift card was decided upon so the teachers can use the money however they wish.
Discussion was held on the issue of snow and ice on the sidewalks while children are walking to school. No solution was found at this time.
The Directory that the PTA put together was discussed. The room parents will handle on an individual class basis any lists required this year.
Meeting was adjourned at approximately 8:30 pm.
The next meeting will be held September 8, 2004 at 7:00 pm.
