I. President’s Report

Margaret welcomed the group to the first PTA meeting of the academic year.  She introduced her board and chairmen and they their reports as follows in these minutes.

II.  Treasurer’s Report:

Betty presented our current budget.  Our current balance is $2892.74.  Deposits have come in from Spiritwear, membership, and basket bingo ticket sales.  The annual budget is to be voted at the October meeting.

III. Vice President Reports

Community Outreach:

Cindy Harlow described two social outings coming up soon.  Basket bingo will be held on Oct. 19th.  Lori Cardillo and Carol Fay are asking for baked goods to sell to patrons at Basket Bingo. The doors open at 1:00pm with Bingo beginning at 2:00pm. There will be an “Evening of Giving” at Pentagon City from 7-11 on Nov. 23rd.  Only 900 tickets will be sold at $8.00.  Island Creek PTA receives $6.00 of the $8.00.  The other two dollars goes to Pentagon City charities which benefits causes like Cystic Fibrosis and Breast Cancer.  It is a night to shop at Pentagon City without the general public.

Connie Pruitt has been named Publicity Chair.

Lisa Backe, Fran O’Donnell, and Vicki Abell are in charge of Genevieve’s Gift Wrap Sale which is on from Sept. 12th through Oct. 3rd.  Orders come in mid-November. We keep 63% of gift wrap sales. If any parents can help volunteer to help tally sales by grade please contact on of the gift wrap chairs.

Education:

Howard Wahlberg  introduced Mary Power as CAPS (Cultural Arts program) chair. Many assemblies are funded through the PTA such as  the first one in October, Billy B.

He reported on Hands on Science.  There is a project to make 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade rooms into “orbiting space” by using kits from Lockheed Martin and the Challenger Center. Mary Sullivan spoke about the Flex program (Foreign Language Experiences). They hope to offer classes starting in January.  Languages they hope to offer include Spanish, French, German, Italian (which is new) and Sign Language.  Last year at Lane, 80 students were in the program.

There will be a new position to the PTA called Special Education Liaison.  Serving in this position will be Aundra-Rhone Jones who spoke about the 70 families of special needs children in our community and how we can best serve them.  She will makes us aware of events throughout the year that can use our support.

Volunteer Coordinators Penny Klein and Sharon Shrader asked to return volunteer forms (the blue ones) and watch for volunteer opportunities.  If a parent doesn’t get a call, please direct them to call Penny if they can help in any way. We are still in need of a Reflections Chair person.  Contact Margaret if you are interested or have questions.

Ways and Means:

Andrew Press talked about the need for help in the area of Legislation and Grant Writing.

Box Tops will be done by Christy Brusick, Cheryl Todd, and Sandy England.  Please wait to send tops in until a flyer is sent home with instructions.  They are still looking for a Campbell Soup labels person.  The Giant and Safeway programs are in the works.  Island Creek has to submit some paperwork to both stores because we are a new school.  An announcement will be made when you  can start signing up to help our school.

Spiritwear forms were due to Joy McManus on September 30th.  To update: the

August order has been delivered.  Targeted delivery for the Sept. order is the second week of October.  That will be the last spiritwear sale for now.

There will be a school directory this year headed up by Stephanie Guinetti and

Terri West.  A permission slip to print your child’s name and information is forthcoming.

Landscaping Committee has been formed and is being headed up by Sandy England.

Liz Dunn discussed membership.  A motion was made to have a $2.00 discount to a family membership.  The motion carried.  Individual memberships are now $8.00 and a family one is $14.00.  The crock squad will be recruiting members especially teachers in the upcoming weeks.  We hope to get the word out so that parents know where the PTA money including their membership dollars is going.

II. Dr. Owner

Dr. Owner discussed the work to be done in creating a new school community.  She asked for our patience as we are coming from a “well oiled machine”.  Island Creek will get there too. Not all supplies and textbooks are in yet.  The best gift that Fairfax County can give is quality teachers to the children.  She feels they have done that at Island Creek. She also reminded the group that starting this week, a weekly sheet of announcements will come home in the Thursday folder.  To cut down on additional flyers, please submit announcements to Theresa Painter who is coordinating this effort. After her initial remarks, a parent question and answer session was conducted.  Many of the questions focused on transportation, patrols, and keeping our children safe.  Questions were also asked about school routines and procedures.

Meeting was adjourned at 9:00pm.

Respectfully submitted,

Joy McManus

Secretary, Island Creek PTA
