III. Vice President Reports

Community Outreach:

Cindy Harlow gave a report to Margaret.  There will be an “Evening of Giving” at Pentagon City from 7-11 on Nov. 23rd.  Only 900 tickets will be sold at $8.00.  Island Creek PTA receives $6.00 of the $8.00.  The other two dollars goes to Pentagon City charities which benefits causes like Cystic Fibrosis and Breast Cancer.  It is a night to shop at Pentagon City without the general public.

Also, a new spirit wear order is happening with a due date of Nov. 20th.  Order forms are available in the office.  The new chair is Sandy Esquivel.  All reorders will be processed by Joy and out in the schools by Monday Nov. 10th.

Liz Townsend is working on the Nov. newsletter (due date was Friday 11/7).  The November newsletter will be out on Nov. 20th. December’s newsletter deadline is Dec. 5th

It was asked of the administration to look into the feasibility of having a movie night in December free of  charge as a social event for the Island Creek children.

The Landscaping Committee met this past week.  There were 3 parents and 4 teachers present.  The are hoping to start a program to reward winter reading with bulbs to help start a bulb garden.  The focus of landscaping efforts will be the front of the school and by our sign at the entrance.  An ESOL teacher is willing to match up to $100.00 to support the landscaping of Island Creek.

Ways and Means:

Andrew Press reported on the following:

Basket bingo was a great success.  Box Top Envelopes are with all teachers.  Collections will be made once a quarter.  It was asked that  teachers remind students to bring them in.

Education:

Howard Wahlberg mentioned that the CAPS presentation–Billy B.  was a great success.  The Flex program (Foreign Language Experiences) hopes to offer classes starting possibly in January.  Languages they hope to offer include Spanish, French, German, Italian (which is new) and Sign Language.  Hands On Science will be starting in mid-December.

A small group of concerned parents lead by Simone McDonald and Lori Cardillo met after the meeting to get the Reflections program off the ground.  Flyers were sent home to advertise the contest.  The due date for the entries is Nov. 20th.  The children who enter will be recognized at the December PTA meeting. The theme is “I am really happy when…”

Liz Dunn stated that we probably have close to 50% of our target audience as PTA members now.

Administrative Report:

Mike Macrina said the Student Council Association will have their first meeting this coming week.  Mike introduced the Special Education Department.  He asked for a list of room parents.  Penny Klein should be able to provide that or work on it with her volunteer list.

Hosting a talent show was brought up as a potential social event for spring.  Friday, November 21st,  was set as the day to distribute the giftwrap orders.    A suggestion was made to institute a  PTA suggestion box that would be placed in the main office to gather more feedback.

A motion carried and the Oct. minutes were approved.

Meeting was adjourned at 8:00 pm.

Next meeting December 2, 2003.

Respectfully submitted,

Joy McManus

Secretary, Island Creek PTA
