Meeting began at 7:05 pm.

I. Dr. Owner

Dr. Owner gave an update on the building.  The second floor is close to being finished.  The school has passed fire inspections.  She hopes to move in on July 28th but she is not in a rush and has plenty  to do from her current site.  Her main topic for discussion this meeting was safety for the first two weeks of school.  She asked for parents to be in locations where the patrols will eventually be.  This would occur for the first two weeks of school.  Penny Klein began organizing volunteers for that.  She will need at least 20 in the morning and another 20 in the afternoon.  Team captains will be appointed.  On July 27th, there will be a walking to school night to practice.  It will begin at 6:00pm with a presentation by our school resource officer (a policeman) at 6:30 pm.  That same evening, there will be an orientation beginning at 7:30 pm for parents of kindergarten children.  The teachers will be returning a week earlier  than other teachers in the County on August 18th for team building and orientation activities.

II. Budget

Betty Harris, treasurer submitted a proposed budget.  Lane’s PTA budget was used as just a guideline.  Dr. Owner made the following suggestions:

1) Consider that with the opening of a new school, many start-up items need to be purchased such as patrol badges and belts, umbrellas and rain slickers for patrols, plants for beautification,  etc…

2) She also suggested hot chocolate for patrols, coke machines, creation of a landscaping committee, student awards and recognition, a program for character recognition and character education, and curriculum and fine arts support.

3) She would like to develop a mission’s statement.

4) She suggested that PTA add their information to a weekly statement from Dr. Owner to save paper.

5) We can utilize the Keep in Touch System to minimize paper.

6) She suggests that leadership committees from Teachers and PTA meet to share ideas. PTA could even invite one grade level per month to attend meetings.

7) Dr. Owner informed us the Scholastic magazine and assignment books will be purchased by the school for the children.

IV Fundraising

Jen Bishop reported earning $474 from Pizzeria Unos. Baha Fresh, our next restaurant fundraiser is on July 29th.  They have agreed to let someone hand out flyers inside the restaurant.  Jen is looking for creative ideas for other fundraising events.  The idea of a kids’ bingo, cake decorating contest, and adult night were brought up.  She is also looking for businesses to be our patrons.  If you know anyone who works in establishments that might contribute, please let her know.

Respectfully submitted,
