I. President’s Report

Margaret Von Kolnitz shared with the group that she received a very nice letter from a faculty member (not her own childrens’teachers) thanking her for volunteering at school.

II. Administrative Report:

Dr. Owner introduced the specialists that joined us.   They were Cindy Kraft-music, Jill Woodall-librarian, Val Taguding-Physical Education, Jim Diersing-Technology Specialist.  A 6th grade versus faculty basketball game was held.  A great time was had by all.  Students either watched it live, on a big screen in the cafeteria, or on the TVs in their classrooms.  The score ended in a tie!  4th grade will be having Colonial Day at the end of January.  Dr. Owner thanked us for our support in so far covering conference registrations, substitute coverage fees, and field trips.

II.  Treasurer’s Report:

To obtain a current copy of the budget, please email Betty Harris.  Pizzas were purchased for the Movie Night.  There was not a great deal of activity this month.  The bill for giftwrap is being finalized.  Current balance is $34,978.66.

III. Vice President Reports

Community Outreach:

Cindy reported on the following:

The Movie Night was held on Dec. 12th.  Pizza, drinks, and cookies were provided.  Toys for tots were collected by Central Springfield Little League.

Liz Townsend is working on the Jan. newsletter which is due out on January 22nd. There was a discussion about merging the Island Creek Courier put out by the school and the Island Breeze put out by the Island Creek PTA.  After discussion about the size of a joint newsletter it was decided to keep them separate but try to better share information.

Social Committee: Jen discussed the next event is a donut social on January 31st at Island Creek from 8 am to 10 am.  It is not a fundraiser.  There will be an order form sent home just to ensure that sufficient donuts are bought to fit the need.  The PTA will provide the coffee and hot cocoa.

The last spirit wear order done in November should be delivered within this week.

A possible upcoming event is a dinner night at Silver Diner with the principals and teachers being the workers.  Jen seemed to get teacher and administrator support so the idea is going to be pursued.  The idea of a tailgate at a Hayfield Hawks football game for next year is also being pursued.  Public praise was given to Jen for a great Movie Night.  400 slices of people were eaten with many, many cookies as well.

Cindy reported attending a meeting at the County level bringing back the news that Dr. Domenech is leaving on March 5th.  She also encourages everyone to sign up for the Keep in Touch system on the fcps website.

If anyone has feedback for other community events for next year’s calendar please share that feedback with Cindy or Jen.

Ways and Means:

A school Directory is ready to be printed. Kinkos will do the printing at $645.00  for 800 copies.  Advertisers are being solicited.  Hopefully by early Feb. decisions on price can be set.

Education:

Howard Wahlberg reported on the following:

The Flex program (Foreign Language Experiences) hopes to offer classes starting now starting in early Feb.  There was a problem with Italian but now it can be offered on a Friday if there is enough interest.  Languages confirmed include Spanish, French, and German.

Hands On Science will not be offered this year due to lack of available teachers.

Mary Power (CAPS) is working on obtaining speakers and supplies for Colonial Day.  She will also be looking into bringing authors to our school soon.

Reflections entries did well at the Cluster Level.  Cameron Cardillo, Shawn Townsend, Emily Jessee, and Cole Bishop received awards at that level.

 New Business:

A new fundraising company is soliciting Island Creek for our fall fundraiser for next year.  Jen and three others met with their representative Jason Lavendar.  They were pleased with the size of the candles, the fact that it is a local company called Lavenders and that other schools liked their products and services.  The profit margin will be less at 50%.  Plans to look at another company, Innisbrook, are being finalized.  A decision is hoping to be made in February.

Liz Dunn is willing to coordinate help with the School Dedication.  If anyone has connections to distinguished community members, please contact Dr. Owner.

A motion carried and the Dec. minutes were approved.

Meeting was adjourned at 8:20 pm.

Next meeting February 3, 2004 at 7pm.

Respectfully submitted,

Joy McManus

Secretary, Island Creek PTA
