Island Creek PTA Meeting

December 4, 2003

I. President’s Report

Margaret Von Kolnitz was home sick for the evening.  Howard Wahlberg ran the meeting and Reflections Ceremony.

 

II.  Treasurer’s Report:

To obtain a current copy of the budget, please email Betty Harris.  Spiritwear took in $1724 so far and one more order was done.  Basket Bingo took in $5573.53.  Evening of Giving took in $732.00.

 

III. Vice President Reports

Community Outreach:

The Movie Night was held on Dec. 12th.  Pizza, drinks, and cookies were provided.  Toys for tots were collected by Central Springfield Little League.   

Liz Townsend is working on the Jan. newsletter The December newsletter will be out on Dec. 18th

                        The Landscaping Committee has received a letter from the SCA expressing interest in helping with beautification efforts.  If anyone else would like to get involved, contact Sandy England.

 

Ways and Means:

Cindy Harlow reported on the following:         

            A school Directory Committee has been formed.  We will look to print about 800 copies.  Businesses are being solicited for advertisements.  PTA members will receive a complementary copy.  The price for non -members has not been determined yet.  It will depend on business support.

            If you have items to be put on the Island Creek Website, please give one  week notice to Kevin Brugman.

           

Education:

Howard Wahlberg mentioned that this week was National Inclusion Week. The Flex program (Foreign Language Experiences) hopes to offer classes starting January 12th.  Languages they hope to offer include Spanish, French, German, and hopefully Italian (which is new) and Sign Language.  Hands On Science will be starting in mid-December.

 

Administrative Report:

 

Dr. Owner introduced the 6th grade team of Ross Flint, Janet Yannucci, and Sally Berman.  The 6th grade will be going to the National Gallery of Art.  Thanks to PTA for their support with the bus cost.  6th grade will be doing an project utilizing old electronics.  Please look for these items and bring them in toward the end of January.  A Gifted and Talented Teachers conference was held at Island Creek and many positive comments were made regarding strategies that are being used here that could be observed by wall displays.  A special thanks from Mrs. Woodall was given  for all the PTA support for the book fair.   Dr. Owner also discussed grading policies.  She mentioned that they have focused so far on horizontal alignment so that grades within a grade level should be consistent.  There are Fairfax County Guidelines as to how to assess students.  The next step will be looking at vertical alignment to achieve a fair and consistent grading policy for Island Creek.  The Hayfield Middle School Theater group performed the Magic Flute for 4th –6th graders. 

 

A motion carried and the Nov. minutes were approved.

 

Meeting was adjourned at 7:20 to begin the Reflections Program.

 

Next meeting January 6, 2003.
