Island Creek PTA Meeting

March 30, 2004

 

Attendees: Cindy Smoot, Liz Townsend, Howard Wahlberg, Joy McManus, Mike Macrina,  Susan Owner, Cindy Harlow, Brooke Brautigan, Amanda O’Hara, Kevin Brugman, Margaret Von Kolnitz, Carol Fay, Fran O’Donnell, Liz Dunn, Simone McDonald, Sharon Shrader, Mary Sullivan, Christy Brusick, Debbie Robinson, Sharon Reynolds, Jeanne Igo, Edmund Davis, and Alicia Szramoski.

 

I. President’s Report

Margaret Von Kolnitz shared with the group that the PTA officers need to check their folders in the mailbox in the main office frequently.  Also, our Membership goal from the State has been achieved. A special thanks to Liz Dunn.  Also, this past week one of our members, Mary Ellen Davis, passed away from cancer.  She was very active in donating her time to the PTA in a variety of ways.  She is survived by her husband and four children.  Her youngest set of twins, Shannon and Melissa, are in 4th grade at Island Creek. Sadness was expressed and a motion was made to donate $25.00 in her name to INOVA life with Cancer program at the family’s request and donate a $50.00 gift certificate to restaurants in the area.

 

II. Administrative Report:

 

Dr. Owner announced that directly following this meeting, the art, music, and physical education curriculum night would be held.  She introduced the 2nd grade team of Jerry Popack, Jennifer Valentine, Rachel Farmer, and Sandy Spiro.  Dr. Owner announced that pins and magnets of the croc will be sold at the Dedication.  She was excited about the turnout and production of science night last week.  The class photos are in.  Dr. Owner passed around a scrapbook to show us.  Ed Davis is interested in planning a Fun  Fair for Island Creek on June 12th.  Due to a short meeting, this will be discussed at some future point.

 

III. Treasurer’s Report:

$13,770.13 .

 

III. Vice President Reports

Community Outreach:

Cindy recognized one of the fundraising chairs, Simone McDonald who spoke about selling a Collectible of Island Creek Elementary School  for $17.00.  A picture of the collective was passed around. Also, there will be an Island Creek Yard Sale on May 8th.  There will be 168 slots sold at $10.00 a piece.  Bus slots which are a double slot will be $20.00.

                       

Ways and Means:           

Andrew Press was not present at the meeting.

            Liz Dunn spoke about Dedication day.  It will be held on April 23rd at 4:00pm.  She is coordinating with our Hospitality committee to provide refreshments.  A list of volunteers is being generated.  There will be time capsule and many other exciting events.

            The Island Creek student directory is at the printers.  Advertisers were obtained and it should be ready after Spring Break. 

           

           

Education:

Howard Wahlberg did not have a report.

 

 New Business:

The Nominating Committee has obtained the following volunteers to run for these PTA offices:

President: Jeanne Igo

Vice President for Community Outreach: Sheila Dixon

Vice President for Ways and Means:Penny Klein

Vice President for Education: Howard Wahlberg

Secretary: Cindy Smoot

Treasurer: Sonia Smith

Our fundraising chairs Jen Bishop and Simone McDonald are returning.  Christy Brusick and Sandy England have committed to doing Food Product Labels. Liz Dunn will return to do Membership.

 

Kevin Brugman reported that Island Creek PTA has its own website now which will be linked from the Island Creek school website.  The address is www.islandcreekpta.org.  Check it out!  All the past minutes and newsletters have been posted.

 

 

Meeting was adjourned at 7:05 pm.

 

Next meeting May 4 at 7:00 pm. PTA Board Elections will be held.
